Star Wars and Star Trek could use a lesson in family values. Both franchises feature family members who try to kill each other, have children who are abandoned by their parents (or simply cannot get along with the ones they have) and even siblings who lust for one another. (more…)

Me and My Shadow

Sunday morning breakfast brings to mind distinct childhood memories. They pop up in my brain like Whac-A-Moles.

Whenever I smell the freshly broken yoke of a fried egg, or hear the sound of bacon sizzling and popping in a pan, I distinctly recall the gravely tone of David Brinkley dispensing the news. I remember Tom Baker offering up Jelly Babies in classic episodes of Doctor Who. And often, random B-movie flicks such as Gargoyles (1972) and Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century (1977) – popular fare of the Million Dollar Movie – rumble through my mind like lumbering freight trains. Star Trek is a story about humanity. Our hopes, our dreams, our strengths and our weaknesses. At its core, it’s about being better versions of ourselves.

I think it’s time to bury the hatchet. Let by-gones be by-gones. It’s all water under the bridge. Why cry over spilt milk.

In other words, get the fuck over it already.

I’ve been a Star Wars fan my entire life. Saw the original film more than a dozen times when I was a kid (and that’s when it was still in theaters). Seeing Empire Strikes Back at the Zigfield in Manhattan is a lasting memory for me. And Return of the Jedi was an epic experience and a sad time, because I knew that the ride was over. Star Wars had ended.
