Lately, reading Superman is an exercise in patience. Much of Scott Lobdell’s work irks me more than anything – I have not enjoyed either Teen Titans or Red Hood and the Outlaws – and his unorthodox, light-hearted style doesn’t mesh well with my fierce love of the written word. (more…)

To be clear: I am not a fan of Scott Lobdell. I dislike Red Hood and the Outlaws as well as Superboy and Teen Titans. So when I heard he was writing Superman, I polished by boxing gloves and prepared to beat the snot of out his work. (more…)
A few years ago, a colleague of mine, desperate to express frustration with a particular student, said something along the lines of, “He can quit reading literature and go back to his comic books.” As a fan of comics, I was crushed. She equated a bad student with a whole genre of literature for which I felt an extreme affinity. I wanted to throw some witty remark back, something biting and at the same time celebratory about the genre. Instead, I laughed and walked out of her room. But it got me thinking about using comics in the classroom.
A while later, I approached my department head about creating a class that would deal specifically in comic books. She shut me down. I didn’t get much of a reason, but I assumed it was due to the preconceived notion of what a comic book is and for what it stands. So I set about changing the perception of comic books. (more…)

In this paraphrased line from “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra summed up the role the Big Apple has played for superheroes across comic book history. (Sinatra was possibly himself a mutant with those freakish blue eyes.) After all, the vast majority of tall buildings a hero might leap in a single bound are located in New York City – or at least based on a real-life counterpart. (more…)
In more important superhero news, Warner Bros. graced the Internet today with the first look at Henry Cavill as Superman in the upcoming film, Man of Steel.
Cavill looks boss as Superman. Let’s hope we get a look at General Zod sooner rather than later.
Man of Steel is slated for a 2013 release.
Who would win in a fight?
It is a primal question that has spurred on more schoolyard arguments and message board flame wars than can be counted. Be it comic book characters, historical figures, fabled monsters or anything else, I can tell you that my favorite will kick your favorite’s butt any day of the week.
In that grand tradition, Unwinnable has embarked on a series of similar battles, pitting contributor against contributor in a battle royale of wits and smack talk. First it was the Kung Fu Showdown. Yesterday, Team Unwinnable’s Brian Bannen leveled a hefty charge against this country’s most famous illegal immigrant, the Man of Steel himself, Superman! Apparently Mr. Bannen thinks that the Last Son of Krypton is irrelevant.
I guess he disagrees with the three million people who tuned into the Smallville finale. (more…)
