Well, that year went fast! It feels like just yesterday that we were getting our lists together for the best toys of 2011. This year I got a helping hand from Ian Gonzales, who took time from curating tomorrow’s best comics list comb through his own favorite toys. It seems like a million years since I last played Quake 3. I can still remember sitting in my Los Angeles apartment, huddled in front of a monitor, hearing Bender tell my opponents to bite his shiny metal ass. I wasn’t terribly good at the game – I’d occasionally hit a winning streak and rain death down from the skies – but I did derive great pleasure from the game’s adrenaline-addled pace. I spawned, I acquired weapons, I killed and I died. I played until my eyes were bleary with gibs and the sound of rocket explosions rang in my ears. I took extra satisfaction from downloading every character skin and sound pack I could get my hands on. On a good night, I’d find myself in the midst of a pop culture slaughterhouse. Boba Fett, Krusty the Clown and RoboCop went toe-to-toe, spilling blood in ways that story bibles would never allow. (more…)
We are proud to say it has been a strong week here at Unwinnable – lots of RoboCop and lots of fun. But what would RoboCop Week be without showing some of the strange videos that can be found on the Internet featuring RoboCop?
It must feel really good to be mad about Mass Effect 3 right now because, though you sound crazy and unreasonable, you’re certainly not alone – you are among a flock of nuts.
For part of 1997 I felt like a crazy person, but I was alone in my craziness. That’s because I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to convince anyone who would listen that the movie Starship Troopers was a brilliant, biting work of satire that skewered fascism, Beverly Hills 90210 and the contemporary action picture. Nobody was having it. Starship Troopers was CG-laden junk for brain-damaged teenagers. Mastrapa has just been drinking again. (more…)
The 24-foot bronze fist sits across the street from Detroit’s Hart Plaza, in the shadow of the towering Renaissance Center. At its most literal, “Monument to Joe Louis” is a tribute to the pugilistic prowess of one of history’s most noteworthy boxers: a fist suspended in the center of a steel pyramid and trailed by just enough of an arm to make it look like the world’s deadliest battering ram. In many ways, it’s the perfect symbol for the Motor City – an image of violence and kinetic energy crossed with a rich history of hard-fought racial coexistence and working-class adversity.

It’s a story about a man who doesn’t know he’s dead. He still has a life, sort of, but the life he used to know is gone forever. It would be quite a tragic story, but this protagonist has, however involuntarily, exchanged his old life for some sort of superhuman ability, which is significant because he wanted to be a hero in his old life.
