Unwinnable

It’s time for the Academy to take the next step in evolution.

On Tuesday, the results of voting by the more than 5,700 movie industry insiders who make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be in. There will be five nominees for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and by all accounts Andy Serkis will not be among them for his critically lauded turn in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

In a summer chock-full of blockbuster Hollywood movies during which I saw the full gamut of films, only a few stood out as really great. You had the Good (Thor, Captain America), the Bad (Green Lantern) and the downright Eyes Bleeding from Boredom (Cowboys & Aliens), and just when I thought nothing celluloid would surprise me, I find myself shocked when I tell you, Dear Reader, that Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a really good movie. On this day in 1962, Marilyn Monroe was found dead. Sixteen years later in June, 1978, the Misfits would release the Bullet EP, featuring the song “Hollywood Babylon,” a two-minute and 17-second tribute to Marilyn Monroe. (more…)
