The first time I saw the trailer for The Heart, She Holler, I didn’t quite know what to think other than it looked weird. After finding out the series was created by Wonder Showzen alumni John Lee, Vernon Chatman and Alyson Levy, I was immediately excited. I almost read Patton Oswalt’s book Zombie Spaceship Wasteland in a single sitting.
That statement actually has very little to do with the length of the book (which is short, running to 190 pages) or the size of the font (which is large-ish) or the spacing (which is generous). It has everything to do with the fact that Zombie Spaceship Wasteland is the most affecting, endearing and honest book I have read in a long time. That there are chapters devoted to Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars is just a bonus.
This came as a bit of a surprise. I first heard of the book on the back of Oswalt’s much talked about editorial in Wired magazine. Considering said editorial was an appeal for the execution of geek culture but that the forthcoming book was called Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, well, it didn’t seem like we were off to a good start… (more…)
The phrase “I’m the Dungeon Master, That’s Why!” comes from a shirt a kid I went to middle school actually owned and wore to school in 7th grade. To this day it remains the ballsiest thing I have ever seen. I mean, maybe it wouldn’t be so ballsy now, but in 1991? That was some shit. (more…)
I just read Patton Oswalt’s editorial, ‘Wake Up, Geek Culture. Time to Die‘ on Wired.com. I am a pretty average fan of his work, i.e., I’ve seen his comedy specials and he makes me laugh. After reading his case on the eventual implosion of geek culture, how the meticulous craftsmanship of obscure countercultural knowledge is dwindling in the face of the evolution of the internet and how the immediacy of consumption has increased, I definitely agree with him – for the most part.
I will say, however, that there is one very clear delineation between geek culture and pop culture, one common thread that exists and makes the desire for counter culture not only a personal imperative, but also a sociological necessity. That single thread is bullying. (more…)
