Every year, we struggle to compile the lists of the things we loved over the course of the year. There are so many of them, the movies, the games, the stories. We debate and vote and hem and haw for the entire month of December, trying to distill them perfectly.

Those who are passionate about their likes are often equally passionate about their dislikes. We here at Team Unwinnable can certainly attest to that.
In 2011, we found many slices of awesomeness that gladdened our geek glands and fanned our fan flames. Sadly, we also watched, heard and experienced a bunch of bullshit that left us craving flashbacks from a perfect year like 1983 to help cleanse our corrupted souls.
That being said, what kind of friends would we be if we didn’t tell you how to think?

Batman: The Dark Knight #2

Fresh off my high from Arkham City, I was looking for a comic that would bring me back into the dark universe of the Batman. The Dark Knight #2 is a vast improvement over the first issue. The art is more consistent, the story is linear and the issue focuses solely on Batman. Save for a pretty silly concept, The Dark Knight lives up to its name this week. (more…)
Xenoholics #1

Xenoholics focuses on a group of people who get abducted by aliens, then attend support groups to discuss their xenophobia. I expected a darker story than the one I got, and in the end, I felt a little cheated. Joshua Williamson crafts a playful story that, when paired with Seth Damoose’s campy art stylings, makes for a lighthearted (if uneven) read. (more…)

Top Cow’s “Pilot Season” has returned and so has Echoes scribe Joshua Hale Fialkov. His latest incarnation, The Test, has the same peculiar feel that Echoes did, but The Test eschews the violence (for now). (more…)

Brilliant #1

Bendis and Bagley have made the Millar/McNiven leap and started a creator-produced series, Brilliant. The premise is that through modern science, a group of college students have created the first superheroes. The semantics behind their creation have yet to be explained, but I don’t see myself following this series for very long. While I love Bendis’ writing in most things, Brilliant is a disappointing read that focuses heavily on (ineffective) character development and excessive exposition. (more…)
