2012 was a great year for comics. Keeping this list to ten was impossible due to ties, so we went for twelve. However, even at twelve, this list feels too small to encompass all the great comics that were published this year. As I make my way to work every morning I see a number of ads on the subway and street for Arrow, the CW show set to debut on October 10th about a character who resembles DC superhero The Green Arrow. The marketing for the show is reminiscent of Smallville, where the shirtless hunky lead is essentially the big sell. Still, Smallville managed to be on the air for 10 seasons with its Superman-style stories, so it holds the honor of being the longest running live-action superhero comic book adaptation to TV.

In this paraphrased line from “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra summed up the role the Big Apple has played for superheroes across comic book history. (Sinatra was possibly himself a mutant with those freakish blue eyes.) After all, the vast majority of tall buildings a hero might leap in a single bound are located in New York City – or at least based on a real-life counterpart. (more…)
Much like Peter Parker and his alter ego, Spider-Man, my love of comics is something that I can never permanently walk away from, even though I’ve tried multiple times. Since I started writing for Unwinnable, I’ve rediscovered my love for comic books – and what keeps me coming back. There’s just so much more to discover and journeys to be had with characters that have been there with me for many years. (more…)
