Seeing Hal Jordan return to the narrative lead in Green Lantern was an exciting experience. I like Simon Baz, but he’s no Hal Jordan. It’s clear when reading this issue that the one thing Johns does best is to write with Hal in the lead. (more…)

While issue #0 of Green Lantern introduced Simon Baz to readers, issue #13 attempts to create some history to the character as Geoff Johns tries to give readers something to relate to in the absence of Hal Jordan and Thaal Sinestro, as well as the impending “Rise of the Third Army” story. The results are a mixed bag of mysterious occurrences and character moments leading up to a fantastic cliffhanger that will definitely have readers back for the next issue. (more…)

After the pretty stunning events of Green Lantern Annual, Geoff Johns introduces the new guy who will don a ring and fly around space in a glowing willpower suit. The idea of expanding the character into different modalities resonates, not only because of its potential market appeal, but also because our society is becoming increasingly diverse. Before Watchmen: Comedian #2

Edward Blake’s time in Vietnam was pivotal to Watchmen. It was here that readers got to see how he was disfigured, how much humanity he lacked and how damn right he was about the future. So when I read issue #2 of Comedian, I expected some depth that would lead up to this (as the cover shows that the story takes place in Vietnam). What this issue reinforces, however, is that Edward Blake is a bad dude. And beyond the lack of character development, the issue has serious flaws in pacing and structure, and at times is difficult to follow due to broken dialogue and half-finished sentences. (more…)
There have been many deaths of girlfriends and loved ones over the years in comics, but none has caused such a stir as Alexandra DeWitt. A photographer for a newspaper in Los Angeles, Alex was the girlfriend of Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. One day, however, Kyle came home to find his girlfriend stuffed in a fridge by a guy named Major Force. This spawned the website, Women in Refrigerators, which dedicated itself to cataloging the often violent ends of the female lovers of superheroes. But there’s more to superhero love than dying, and sometimes a hero’s girlfriend turning up in a refrigerator is the best thing to happen. (more…)
Those who are passionate about their likes are often equally passionate about their dislikes. We here at Team Unwinnable can certainly attest to that.
In 2011, we found many slices of awesomeness that gladdened our geek glands and fanned our fan flames. Sadly, we also watched, heard and experienced a bunch of bullshit that left us craving flashbacks from a perfect year like 1983 to help cleanse our corrupted souls.
That being said, what kind of friends would we be if we didn’t tell you how to think?

Batwoman #4

I picked up Batwoman on a recommendation from a friend. I had passed on the title previously because, while I enjoyed Kate Kane’s appearance in 52, I had no desire to follow her in her own series. What I found, after reading this issue, is that I’ve been missing out on some of the best art to come out of the DC machine in years. (more…)
