Unwinnable

If the voting for this list is any indication, 2012 was an incredible year for games. Over 40 contributors nominated 91 games – a dizzying cross-section of games across all platforms from PC to console to mobile. Every top ten list a contributor submitted dramatically changed the standings. There were moments when games as different as Borderland 2, Hotline Miami and Dear Esther all occupied the top spot. Almost every contributor’s list had a game on it that I had never heard of before – Howling Dogs, Zaga-33, Dead Trigger and more. Mobile and downloadable games went toe to toe with the biggest AAA titles. Even more surprising, they won in a landslide.

There was a lot to love this year. The top standings wound up being so interesting that I could not limit it to a mere best ten games of 2012. A baker’s dozen seemed much more appropriate. So, without further ado, dive in to Unwinnable’s favorite games of 2012!  (more…)

I first met Dyad last year at PAX East, resting comfortably in the back of a crowded expo hall. I was drawn to it. In part, my attraction was due to the twisting cacophony of colors on display, but far more interesting was the cobbled-together throne that accompanied the game. I remember sitting down in the wooden and metal deathtrap, buckling the harnesses to secure myself in, and the developer handing me a waiver to sign in case the machine exploded or otherwise caused me bodily harm. Only after the waiver was back in the developer’s hand did they give me the PS3 controller, and I knew I was in for something special. (more…)

While we know you’re all violenty excited for Brink and L.A. Noire to be released next week, remebering your indies is almost important as brushing your teeth. Shawn McGrath has been hard at work promoting and perfecting DYAD, a game that has quickly become one of Unwinnable’s most anticipatd games of 2011. Do yourself (and Shawn) a favor by checking in and seeing how 2011′s Sleeper Pick of the Year is coming along.

PAX East 2011 gave Team Unwinnable a lot to look forward to in the world of videogames and geek culture. It also gave us some memorable moments that we won’t -and can’t – soon forget. So much so that if all of it made it to print, let’s just say our readers may think of us in a different light. With that being said, clear your mind ["...and the rest will follow!" Ed.] and in no particular order, here is our list of what we thought was the best and worst of PAX. Enjoy.

It is indeed the unique gaming experience when one achieves a moment of stasis, a state of equilibrium caused by opposing equal forces. In the case of Dyad, those forces – the player/agent and the game – relate mutually to internalize something which is wholly external or other. (more…)
