In this paraphrased line from “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra summed up the role the Big Apple has played for superheroes across comic book history. (Sinatra was possibly himself a mutant with those freakish blue eyes.) After all, the vast majority of tall buildings a hero might leap in a single bound are located in New York City – or at least based on a real-life counterpart. (more…)
2010 has been a big year for comics. The Walt Disney Company officially owns Marvel Entertainment. DC Comics announced it is moving their digital comics business to Burbank, CA (also, sadly, closing one of its most successful and groundbreaking imprints, Wildstorm) and Archie got married.
So, in light of this momentous year, Team Unwinnable takes a look at the comics that made us forget all the behind the scenes stories and reminds us of just why we read comics.

Five thousand years of Western Civilization have all led up to the summers of 2011 and 2012.
For comic book fans, we are headed to the Golden Age of cinema. Starting next year, Marvel is creating the perfect storm by releasing Thor in March, Captain America: The First Avenger in July and then assembling them together with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man into the 2012 Avengers mega-blockbuster the following year. And that franchise will in turn spawn even more spin-offs: Black Widow, Nick Fury, Ant-Man and the Hulk (again) are all waiting their turn. (more…)

During the mid 1990s, superhero comics were pretty awful. Don’t believe me? Let’s look at some of them…
Spider-Man’s creative team decided to remake Multiplicity.
Aquaman lost his hand, grew a beard and threw a shirts-off party.
Superman died, came back, wore a mullet and then did the Electric Slide.
The Justice League consisted of a brooding Booster Gold, Tribal Tattoo Guy Gardner and a host of forgettable superheroes. So much for the World’s Greatest Heroes, huh?
Meanwhile, at Avengers Mansion, Iron Man was a murdering, psychopathic traitor under the influence of Kang the Conqueror while Captain America’s Super Soldier Serum was killing the Star Spangled Avenger. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were neither heroic nor mighty.
Aside from the occasional glimmer of hope, mainstream superhero comics wallowed in mediocrity. That all changed in 1997. (more…)
