Unwinnable

Superhero Movie Smackdown Volume 1

Who would win in a fight?

It is a primal question that has spurred on more schoolyard arguments and message board flame wars than can be counted. Be it comic book characters, historical figures, fabled monsters or anything else, I can tell you that my favorite will kick your favorite’s butt any day of the week.

In that grand tradition, Unwinnable has embarked on a series of similar battles, pitting contributor against contributor in a battle royale of wits and smack talk. First it was the Kung Fu Showdown. Now it is the Superhero Movie Smack Down. Enter the arena, Dear Reader, and be thrilled by our blood sport. (more…)

Mobile Gaming

Upward Mobility

Eb Samuel is a gamer on the go and is bringing his expertise to a monthly roundup of mobile gaming for Complex.

It’s a phone! It’s a PSP! It’s both! Yes, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY cell phone is both cell phone and gaming system, and for once that’s not just marketing spiel. Like the ill-fated PSP Go, it slides up to reveal a control pad and touch analog controls. Does it work? Well, sort of—but more on that later.

Brandon Lloyd

Brandon Lloyd of the Denver Broncos has some strong opinions.

So you really don’t like the new Madden games?
Really. I’ve shied away from it because I don’t like the next-gen graphics or the controls. I think they’re getting closer, but the controls are just too confusing. I like the old PS2 controls. Plus, the character models. I can remember the first Madden on PS2, and I was loving those little details, things like QB towels. They should have developed around those character models. Now they all look like tall athletes. They all have long arms. It’s just not very visually stimulating.

Green Lantern

Green Around the Gills

Eb Samuel reviewed Green Lantern for our sister site, Tail Slate. He was not pleased:

The Green Lantern mythology is complicated and ethereal, involving a unique take on willpower and fear and courage as heavy themes. These themes worked brilliantly in movies gone by, such as Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, but here, a lack of exposition makes viewers feel as if they’re watching an exceptionally well-CGIed children’s movie.

Dunce

Well, that was exhausting.

We made it through another E3. We played and demoed over fifty upcoming games. We sat through press conferences, survived parties, met dozens of brilliant people and talked about the world of videogames to the point of exhaustion. But beyond just the games each of us enjoyed, there were plenty of other lessons to be learned during our week in Los Angeles. We would like to share this knowledge with you. (more…)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

This was my first E3 experience. Heck, it was my first experience in California.

And, courtesy of Stu’s “One Night in Los Angeles,” you all know by now that I spent one not-so-delightful evening in California Hospital (yes, that’s its real name), instead of at the delightful Downtown Sheraton Hotel.

It wasn’t that horrible. Turns out, when you tell medical folks in L.A. that you want out early the next morning so you can visit E3, they get excited and tell all their other late-night medical buddies. Before you know it, an Asian doctor is visiting you. You figure he’s just replacing the Indian doctor who wants to keep you overnight for “observation.” But really he’s stopping by to find out what your early impressions of E3 are (that’s a true story).

Another true story? In between that one strange evening and now, I found time to ponder my favorite non-Wii U and non-Vita E3 2011 moments. You know, for posterity. (more…)

Jock Jams

Believe it or not, but some of us over here on Team Unwinnable like sports, and when we write about it, we do it well.

So it’s finally sunk in: Peyton Hillis is really going to be on the cover of Madden NFL 12. Sorry, but it just took us awhile to digest the fact that Peyton Freaking Hillis, who has exactly one 1,000-yard season and one 10-TD season since high school, has somehow landed the most prestigious box cover in sports gaming. No wonder gaming companies aren’t run by fans.
