Unwinnable

I recently saw The Cabin in the Woods with two friends of mine, one of whom had already seen the movie three times since it came out. I was intrigued by his interest and was not disappointed when I saw the film for myself. But over the next few days, I realized the movie was more than just a riff on horror movie conventions – it was a movie about making movies. (more…)

Adventures in Puppetland

As some of you may have guessed from my last article, I have a bit of a soft spot for puppets. I grew up with not just the obvious Muppets and Sesame Street, but also Eureeka’s Castle, Pee-wee’s Playhouse and even Mister Rogers. There is something about the ability to imbue felt and fur with a soul that gives me not only a love for the puppets but a profound respect for the people behind (or under) them. (more…)

We didn’t even watch the whole movie, really. I sort of checked out with a hearty “meh” when the closet door was flung open and revealed the monster that had previously haunted my dreams. I was unaffected. I knew, in this moment, that I had become a man, and that watching the rest of the movie was going to be a spectacularly anticlimactic experience. (more…)

My father, from whom I inherited the lion’s share of my geekitude, is an avid fan of the classic horror from the ’50s and ’60s, so there was a good deal of Edgar Allen Poe by way of Vincent Price in my formative years. It wasn’t long before I started sneaking in ’80s horrorfests, probably starting with A Nightmare on Elm Street and Child’s Play and then working my way through all of the classics – The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Shining (the majority of them from between the ages of eight and eleven).
