Why 2017 will be Game of Thrones’ Biggest Year Yet

In under a decade, the Game of Thrones saga has been transformed from a cult collection of books to hugely successful TV series that has attracted plenty of critical acclaim and record-breaking viewing audiences.

But 2017 looks to be a momentous year for fantasy fans, as HBO’s Game of Thrones series will draw to a close in what’s expected to be a blistering finale. Rather than a single long seventh season, it’s expected that there will be two shorter seven-episode seasons that will begin at the end of June.

In terms of what we can expect from the TV show, it looks like there will be plenty more political intrigue and dramatic killings. Many people were shocked by the dramatic death of Margaery Tyrell in season six, and it’s expected that there will be further high-profile slayings towards the end of the seventh series.

This is especially so as the actress who plays Arya Stark has already stated that season seven will end on a cliffhanger in a way that will set up a very dramatic series eight later in the year.

It’s this ability to keep fans guessing that’s helped Game of Thrones become one of the 21st century’s best-loved franchises. Even some of the gaming spin-offs of the series seem to revel in adding unbearable suspense to the fantasy entertainment.

Whether it’s 2017 seeing the release of the second season of Telltale’s episodic Game of Thrones franchise, or even the Game of Thrones slots game at CasinoEuro, it seems that it’s this blend between suspense and fantasy that has helped the franchise become a world-beater.

This is especially so ever since the series’ author George R. R. Martin has been taking unexpectedly long to release his Winds of Winter book. The Song of Ice and Fire books were traditionally meant to stay ahead of the TV series, but ever since the writer struggled to keep up the pace, it’s been a guessing game as to where the fantasy saga will head next.

Thankfully, it seems that Martin may eventually finish the book this year which will open up debate for what we can expect from the franchise in 2018.

Already there are rumours of a television prequel series and a promising movie adaptation, but with the likes of online games and many more books to come, it’s expected that Game of Thrones won’t be going away anytime soon.
