Personally I like awards shows, I like seeing people I respect being awarded. If I go to a lunch counter expecting something edible, and get something horrible, I will complain.

The statues are ancillary to it, but I enjoy seeing people who deserve recognition get that recognition. If I wanted to catch glimpses of celebrities and witness various musical acts and skits I would watch a variety hour.

But those doesn't really exist anymore. I wonder why?
